Some of our Friends

In 1997 a small, but active group of volunteers founded the Ritzville Pet Rescue. The nonprofit group was the first organization in Adams County established for the care of abandoned, neglected, and abused animals. Initially the program was run out of volunteers' homes, and despite such humble beginnings, it successfully facilitated the adoption as well as the spaying and neutering of hundreds of animals. The program grew to encompass all of Adams County where it worked closely with the area's veterinarians, the Adams County Sheriff's Department, and the cities of Ritzville, Lind, Washtucna, and Othello.

It soon became apparent most of the animals needing Pet Rescue's attention came from the county's higher population areas in and around Othello. In February of 2009, Pet Rescue's name was changed to Adams County Pet Rescue, and a shelter was established at a rented facility in Othello. On September 29, 2009 that facility was destroyed in a fire. Fortunately, no animals were killed, but Pet Rescue lost over $34,000 in improvements and equipment. Left without a facility of their own, Pet Rescue moved their operation to the Othello City Pound.

Despite less than favorable conditions, in 2010 Pet Rescue was able to adopt out 235 dogs, fifty cats, and one horse. They paid for the spaying and neutering of 173 dogs and fifty cats as well as medical expenses and emergency care for rescued animals and all food and boarding expenses in conjunction with the organization.

Pet Rescue operates as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and is funded by tax deductible donations, grants and two small government contracts to care for the areas animals.

The dedicated individuals that care for the shelter animals, share a love for all creatures and a desire to help. They take in all of Othello's strays along with abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs, cats, and horses throughout the county. They rehabilitate them as best they can and place them in loving, caring environments.
